Peterborough United hosted Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One and, despite an utterly dominant first hour, had to scrap their way to three points.

Darren Ferguson made wholesale change to his Posh team from last weekend’s draw with Lincoln, altering both shape and personnel.

Posh started fast, finding the opening goal on the ten minute mark. Kwame Poku picked up his fourth goal of the season, after he lofted his effort in following a scrappy passage of play.

Fergie’s side dominated the first half, and got their reward in the form of the second ‘cushion’ goal. Ricky Jade-Jones was played through on goal, and rounded the goalkeeper before tapping into an empty net.

Malik Mothersille missed a chance at close range to compound Bristol Rovers’ misery just before the break.

Following the interval, Posh continued their control of the game. Left-back Jack Sparkes was a notable performer, delivering several great crosses for the Posh forward line.

The game was seemingly put beyond doubt on 63 minutes, Malik Mothersille latching onto a floated pass from Sparkes and finishing well.

Bristol Rovers gave themselves a chance in the game on 75 minutes after substitute Luke McCormick slammed home from close range.

The away side then doubled their tally just one minute later, Gatlin O’Donkor looping his header over the stranded Jed Steer and cutting the Posh advantage to just one goal.

Despite a wave of Bristol Rovers chances and an agonising ten minutes of additional time, Posh held on to give themselves their first win at London Road this campaign.

Posh now have two away games in a row; firstly, in the capital on Tuesday when they take on Leyton Orient, and then at title favourites Birmingham City on Saturday September 28.

Tickets for both games remain available on Posh’s website.
