Report on Huntingdonshire FA Sunday Cup Final at Huntingdon Town FC.
Cardea FC 4 Atletico GK 1
Although this cup final was not as one-way as the final score suggests it was the Peterborough based side who were the clear winners on the night.
Two goals early in the second half to add to their first half lead gave Cardea an advantage they were never likely to surrender although Atletico kept going to claim a last gasp consolation goal.
After a tightly fought opening spell Cardea took the lead on 23 minutes when Mark Rayment netted following a set piece free kick.
Atletico had little to offer by way of response although they defended well for the remainder of the half.
The significant breakthrough came just before the hour with Cardea scoring twice in a four minutes’ spell.
A defensive error let in Josh Staggs for a 53rd minute second goal and before the Huntingdon based club could recover and Kieran Hibbins added a third goal.
Atletico refused to give up and they created chances but the Cardea defence well marshalled by Dylan Martin and Martyn Fox held firm.
A fourth goal from substitute Ed Sakovich ended Atletico’s resistance but they had the last word with Henry Smith’s added time consolation goal.
