Peterborough First has elected Mohammed Farooq as its new group leader.
Councillor Farooq was chosen unanimously at a group meeting on Thursday, October 10, and will take over from Councillor Chris Harper.
Mr Harper led the group through a significant period of growth in 2023, which saw several councillors join and Peterborough First become the council's new administration until the 2024 local elections.
Following these elections, the group increased its numbers to 14 councillors, making it the second-largest group in the council chamber.
Mr Harper said: "It’s been a great privilege to serve as the group leader and navigate us through an incredible period.
"With the responsibility of being such a large group now comes extra responsibilities and time demands too.

"With my other council duties, which include being the chair of the planning and environmental committee, plus with my ward and volunteering commitments, I decided it was time for a new leader.
"But to assure my colleagues and residents, I’m not going anywhere.
"Residents have put their faith in me to serve Stanground South and this I will continue to do.
"Cllr Farooq has my full support, and I know from his time as leader of the council he will serve the group, and the city, well."
Councillor Farooq said: "It’s exciting times for our group and I am honoured that my colleagues have unanimously supported me.
"Our group has a great spirit, and to reaffirm this, the leadership was handed over with a handshake and a hug.
"Such is the warmth of our group.
"I am a leader of equals, as every one of our 14 councillors is there to serve their wards to the best of their abilities and ensure they bring their skills and expertise to the council chamber."
Councillor Farooq's first full council meeting as the new group leader will be on October 16.
