A man has been jailed for more than three years after attacking his former partner with a hockey stick.

Florin Bairam, 34, from Northfield Road, New England, Peterborough, also dragged the woman by her hair.

He controlled her life, spending her money, taking her phone, and only letting her eat, bathe, and sleep when he permitted it.

Bairam even threatened to kill the victim and her children.

His abusive behaviour was discovered when he was himself a victim of assault and visited by police.

During this visit, he aggressively told the victim to be quiet when she spoke to him in Romanian.

The police took her upstairs to check if she was alright, and Bairam signalled for his mother to accompany them, but she was asked to stay downstairs.

As they walked out, Bairam made a "cut-throat gesture" towards the victim.

Upstairs, the victim showed the officer her bruises and revealed the assaults.

She expressed a desire to leave the country to escape Bairam but said she was too scared.

Bairam admitted to false imprisonment and actual bodily harm at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, October 4, and was jailed for two years and two months.

He was also given a restraining order against the victim.

On top of this, he was sentenced for unrelated burglary and fraud charges, adding another 18 months to his sentence, making a total of three years and eight months.

Detective Constable Edyta Nightingale, who investigated the case, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim who was extremely brave to come forward and tell officers about her abuser.

“Bairam used intimidation, fear and violence against the victim, and I am pleased he is now behind bars.

“Tackling domestic abuse is one of our main priorities as we strive to support victims and bring perpetrators before the courts.”
