October is Menopause Awareness Month, and here, menopause coach and nutritionist Babita Paul talks about the latest proposals to support women.
October 18 marks Menopause Awareness Day and proposals under the new Labour government are set to ensure employers of 250+ staff have a robust menopause policy and wellbeing plan, widely circulated and widely available to all.
Is that you? Do you have a 250+ staff force? How many are women? How many are men but, also how many work, meet and co-exist with women?
Labour has pledged to bring in a requirement for large companies to publish and implement a “menopause action plan” that sets out how they are supporting their employees experiencing menopausal symptoms.
Actions, to name but few could include:
- Alterations to material and cut of uniforms
- Flexible working hour and sick leave allowances
- Training managers about how the menopause can affect women
- Assistance and workplace facilities such as access to ventilation
- Considerations for role changes
- Removal of taboo and ‘suffering in silence’ – allowing a safe environment to speak out
Employers will be required to submit their action plans to an existing government portal used for gender pay gap reporting.
Angela Rayner, has reportedly stated: “Everyone should be supported to thrive at work. But all too often women going through the menopause are being let down.
Under the Conservatives, the number of women leaving the workforce is soaring, and productivity is plummeting as those who continue in work aren’t getting the support they need. This is bad for women, bad for business and bad for our economy.”
