A cider pub in Peterborough has been crowned the best in East Anglia as part of the CAMRA awards of 2024.

Frothblowers can be found on Storrington Way in Werrington, and is one of a number of 'micropubs' found in Peterborough.

The multi-award-winning pub was the second micropub to launched in Peterborough and is run by business partners John Lawrence and Steve Williams.

The pub opened in 2017 and is open seven days a week, boasting a range of ciders, beers and real ales.

It was awarded Cambridgeshire CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2019.

It was named in remembrance of the Ancient Order of Frothblowers, a beer drinking charity from the 1920s.

Steve told Peterborough Matters that he was "extremely pleased" after being informed of the result.

He said: "We've been nominated as the CAMRA Cider Pub of Peterborough before, but to be recognised at a county and regional level is phenomenal.

"Clearly, CAMRA knows a good thing when it sees it and the fact that we have a range of nearly 30 different ciders has been noticed.

"Our customers are very loyal and the fact that we have such a wide choice of goof quality real ale and ciders is what sets us apart from other pubs."

According to the Micropub Association, an organisation established in 2012, a micropub is defined as a "small freehouse" which mainly serves cask ales, "promotes conversation" and "shuns all form of electronic entertainment".

Frothblowers closely resembles this definition and, as Steve explains, the pub encourages patrons to "sit and chat".

He said: "It's something different. There's no music and there are no TVs. People just have to sit, chat and enjoy really good cider, beer and ale.

"The Frothblowers is like a stripped-back pub. We've gone back to the day when people used to sit in the pub to chat, not to watch a TV screen."

Asked what makes the micro pub popular, Steve added: "We're completely independent like all micropubs, so we get choice over what drinks we stock.

"We don't have to play ball with any corporations or adhere to a corporate identity. The pub is out identity. We do what we like and listen to our customers and do what they like, so we're able to change and adapt to what other micropubs do in the city."

The Frothblowers will be presented with the CAMRA Regional Cider Pub of the Year Award at the Peterborough Beer Festival.
