An inquest has been opened into the death of a serving prisoner at HMP Peterborough.

Gareth Jones, 42, was rushed from the prison to Peterborough City Hospital on July 12 following an incident at the prison.

He died the next day.

Caroline Jones, an area coroner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, opened an inquest into Mr Jones’ death today (Thursday August 8).

At the brief hearing at Lawrence Court, Huntingdon, she explained the case was being adjourned because of ongoing police and criminal proceedings.

Fellow inmate Jordan Neale, 26, of HMP Peterborough, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court charged with murder on July 15.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has also launched a fatal incident investigation following Mr Jones’ death.

This is standard procedure for all prisoner deaths.

Ms Jones said at the close of the hearing: “I extend my condolences to the family of Mr Jones for their loss.”
