Cracks are already showing on the £32million Kings Dyke crossing which connects Peterborough and Whittlesey - despite it only being built two years ago.

Known as the Ralph Butcher Causeway - after the local councillor who fought for it for 50 years - the bridge opened in July 2022, six months ahead of schedule.

Cambridgeshire County Council said this week that it is expected to be closed for at least a week after cracks were spotted in the westbound carriageway.

One lane is temporarily closed using two-way traffic lights, as a precaution.

This is in place while Cambridgeshire County Council's contractor, Jones Bros, carry out some tests which will involve digging into the road.

Jones Bros will be doing the tests to see why these cracks have appeared.

Therefore, some movement is always expected while the road settles.

"We will be keeping the situation under constant review," said a council spokesperson.

Other work will be carried out at the same time, such as clearing the drains and testing the safety barriers.

"We’d like to thank people for their patience during this time and further information will be provided in due course," the spokesperson added.

"But it is expected one lane will be closed for at least a week.
