Free dementia awareness workshops are being held at Ashlynn Grange Care Home to support those caring for a loved one who is living with dementia or showing early signs of the condition.
This workshops will look at different types of dementia, how dementia can affect a person and understanding how and why a person living with dementia may become frustrated.
The wider community is also invited to join the training sessions, with teams at Ashlynn Grange encouraging Post Office workers, bank staff and teams from neighbouring opticians and hearing centres to join them to gain a better understanding of the condition.
The workshops will be held at the Peterborough care home, in Bretton Gate, on February 10 with sessions at 10am and 1pm. Each session will last two hours and the same content will be covered in each.
They will be hosted by the learning and development team from Athena Care homes, which runs Ashlynn Grange.
Athena Care Homes says it has vast experience caring for those living with dementia and other mental health conditions, and the team want to share that knowledge with the community to give them the confidence they need to support someone living with dementia.
They also want to give relatives the opportunity to talk about their experience with others going through something similar, because they know how important it is for families to feel supported, listened to and understood.
Lucy Hoddy, learning and development manager, said: “This journey can be as frightening, confusing and overwhelming for relatives as it is for the person living with dementia.
“We want to break down the condition and help families understand how best to support their loved ones, how to ease their frustrations and work with them so they can continue to enjoy one another’s company.
“These sessions are open to anyone who has concerns someone close to them may be experiencing early dementia, and those who know someone already living with dementia who want to know more about this disease. We also want to help others in the community understand the condition.”
