Paul Bristow MP visited Chestnuts Community Centre to celebrate their success in securing funding of £10,500 from the Morrisons Foundation.

The grant from the charitable arm of the supermarket has enabled the community centre to buy new furniture, cooking equipment and food for their innovative healthy living club.

The community centre acts as an important community hub for elderly residents that otherwise may have limited social interaction.

Residents will be shown how to cook healthy meals and will also participate in light exercise.

Paul Bristow MP said: “What a wonderful lunchtime bash at the Chestnuts Community Centre on Norman Road.

“Morrisons have given them a grant of £10,500 - what a wonderful gift that means the world for everyone involved.

“Thank you also to Titch and her daughter who do a brilliant job for their community.”

Peterborough Matters:

Evelyn Speechley, founder and centre manager at Chestnuts Community Centre, added: “Chestnuts is a busy community centre in a low income housing development in Peterborough.

“It has a large elderly population and the centre is a life saver for them in terms of keeping social contact.

“Following extensive consultation with our seniors, they told us that they would love a healthy eating social project on a Friday at the centre.

“Thanks to the support from Morrisons, we have been able to make this a reality”.

Our new project runs from 10am - 3pm every Friday with our professional cook ready to provide a range of healthy living meals and we also run activities and light exercise activities.”

Sam Browning, community champion from the Morrisons store in Peterborough, said: “It's an honour to present this donation to such a worthy cause in our community.

“Chestnuts provide such great support to so many people and we hope this donation from the Morrisons Foundation will make a huge difference to their work for many years to come.”

The Morrisons Foundation was set up by Morrisons supermarket in 2015 and awards grants for charity projects which help improve people’s lives.

Since launching, over £39 million has been donated to hundreds of charities across England, Scotland and Wales.
