University Centre Peterborough students showcase their work in their first ever Student Film Showcase in partnership with Gateway Film Festival.

On November 8, the red carpet was rolled out for creative students from Peterborough College and UCP as well as family, friends and members of the creative community.

From 14 shortlisted entries, three students from Peterborough College walked away from the ceremony with awards.

A range of creative film was shown that night including music videos, documentaries and short films.

Lily Izzo, Riley Edmett and Jack Lewis were voted the winners by local filmmakers Jay Gearing from Red 7 Productions, Judi Alston from One to One Development Trust and Gateway Film Festival runner Emily Steele.

Lily won her award for her music video titled ‘It will all end in tears’ that focused on the negative effects social media has on the young people who use it.

Riley’s winning documentary ‘Let the music play’ was a favourite among the judges that looked into the feeling of uncertainty around the future of the live music industry following the Covid pandemic.

Lastly, Jack won best short film with an experimental piece that “pushed all of the boundaries of filmmaking”.

Emily said: "The students' work was amazing, we saw 14 amazing diverse films ranging across fiction, documentary and music videos.

“It was really difficult for us to pick the winners and we ultimately chose the films we awarded based on their creativity and technical achievements.

“The event had such a lovely and supportive atmosphere and the students are a credit to the brilliant teaching at Peterborough College and UCP. Thank you to all the staff and students who took part in the event."

Rachel Pishhorn, Curriculum Leader of the Media Production and Journalism degrees at UCP, said: “We were delighted to host our first ever Student Film Showcase as part of the Gateway Film Festival, and our students were so excited to have their films shown on the big screen.

“They should all be very proud of what they have achieved, and I hope we can host more events like this to enable more collaboration between creatives in the community.”

The winning films, along with those who made the shortlist, will be shown on our student blog at https://www.insidetheboxucp.com.
